Cotton gauze: the fabric made for heat
Hold a piece of cotton gauze up to the light and you'll see it glow. The threads sit a little apart, leaving tiny gaps across the whole surface. Those gaps are the point: they turn a piece of clothing into something closer to a breeze. In a country where summer means 40°C afternoons and monsoon humidity, few fabrics make more sense.
What is gauze fabric?
Gauze is a thin, light fabric with a loose, open weave. Its name is usually traced to the city of Gaza, long associated with fine woven cloth; the Roman writer Pliny the Elder described a "thin gauze" made there. Early gauze was woven from silk. Today, cotton gauze is the most common kind for clothing.
Technically, gauze is defined by its weave. In a classic gauze weave, the crosswise threads are arranged in pairs that twist around each lengthwise thread, locking the open structure in place. Most clothing gauze today uses a simple, loosely spaced plain weave that gives the same airy result.
You'll also see double gauze: two layers of gauze joined by occasional stitches. It keeps the softness and breathability while adding opacity, so it isn't see-through.
Why cotton gauze keeps you cool
- Air moves through it. The open weave lets air pass straight through the fabric, carrying heat away from your skin.
- It absorbs sweat. Cotton fibres soak up moisture, and the open structure helps it evaporate.
- It doesn't cling. Gauze is often finished with a natural crinkle, so it sits slightly off the skin instead of sticking to it on humid days.
- It gets softer. Washing relaxes the fibres, so gauze clothes feel better the longer you own them.
- It travels well. Crinkled gauze is meant to look slightly rumpled, so it needs no ironing.
How we use gauze: the Sandloom Series
Our Sandloom Series was designed around airflow. Most of its pieces are made from cotton gauze, including:
- Bottoms: the Big Stepper baggy pants, Bangkok Barrel wide leg pants, Moon Dance balloon pants, Wild and Free lounge joggers, Goa Groove harem joggers and the Freeform parachute pants.
- Kurtas and shirts: the Cabana crinkle kurta, Rooted split neck kurta, Nomad band collar kurta, Unbound popover shirt and Cuban collar crinkle shirt.
- Tops: the Wildflower crop top, Boho batwing top, Sunday Soul high-low top, smocked cami and ruched tube top.
We pair gauze with roomy cuts deliberately. A loose shape lets air in; an open weave lets it out. Together they make clothes you can wear through an Indian summer without noticing them.
How to care for cotton gauze
- Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, or hand wash.
- Don't wring; gently press out water.
- Dry in shade; the crinkle returns as it dries.
- Skip the iron. If you must, use low heat on the reverse.
Frequently asked questions
Is cotton gauze see-through?
Single gauze can be slightly sheer in light colours. Double gauze and darker shades are opaque.
Is gauze fabric good for summer?
It's one of the best. The open weave lets air flow and the cotton absorbs sweat.
Does cotton gauze shrink?
Like most cotton, it can shrink slightly at high temperatures. Wash cold and dry in shade.
What's the difference between gauze and muslin?
Both are light, loosely woven cottons. Gauze has a more open, airy structure; muslin is a little denser and smoother.
