Harem, baggy, balloon or parachute? How to tell them apart
Loose trousers have taken over, and with them comes a vocabulary problem. A shop calls one pair "harem", another "balloon", a third "parachute", and they can all look like comfortable pants with room to spare. The differences are real, though, and they decide how a pair fits, moves and styles. Here is the short version, then the detail.
| Style | Crotch | Leg shape | Ankle | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Harem | Dropped, low | Very full | Gathered | Yoga, travel, lounging, festivals |
| Baggy (wide leg) | Regular | Wide and straight | Open | Everyday, work, city |
| Balloon | Regular to slightly low | Full through the knee | Gathered or tapered | Statement outfits, summer |
| Parachute | Regular | Roomy, with cargo pockets | Cuffed or toggled | Streetwear, travel |
What are harem pants?
Harem pants are long, baggy trousers with a dropped crotch, gathered at the ankle. The silhouette is ancient. It draws on the şalvar of the Middle East and Turkey, and on its South Asian relatives, the shalwar and the patiala salwar. Western fashion discovered it around 1910, when the Parisian couturier Paul Poiret showed "harem" trousers in his collections, and in 1911 he presented them as part of his "Style Sultane". The late 1980s brought another revival, when MC Hammer made a version so famous it was renamed after him.
In India, harem pants also go by afghani pants, aladdin pants and genie pants. The drop crotch is the defining detail: it gives the hips and thighs complete freedom, which is why yoga practitioners, dancers and long-haul travellers swear by them. What are baggy pants?
"Baggy" is the umbrella term for any trouser cut with generous room. Most often it means a wide, straight leg with a regular crotch, which looks the closest to a conventional trouser and is the easiest to wear to work. Our Big Stepper and Bay Breezer are classic examples. Our complete guide to baggy pants covers fit and styling.
What are balloon pants?
Balloon pants are full through the thigh and knee, then gathered or tapered at the ankle, so the leg puffs out like a balloon. After Alaïa's spring/summer 2025 show, they became one of the most talked-about trousers of 2026, worn on the street by Zoë Kravitz and Iris Law. Try the Moon Dance balloon pants.
What are parachute pants?
Parachute pants come from 1980s breakdance culture, where dancers wore nylon trousers that slid across the floor. They have a roomy leg, utility pockets and an ankle that cuffs or cinches so the fabric stacks on your shoes. Modern cotton versions, like our Freeform, swap nylon for breathable fabric.
